The Battle of Chernobyl (2008)

Posted May 9th, 2011 by memorymethod.net

The Chernobyl disaster occurred on April 26, 1986 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Pripyat, Ukraine. At that time, Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union. The event is regarded as the worst accident in the history of nuclear power. Because there was no containment building to trap the radiation, radioactive fallout drifted over parts of the western Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, the UK, and the eastern United States. Large areas of Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia were badly contaminated. About 70% of the radioactive fallout landed in Belarus. About 200000 people needed to be evacuated (moved away) and moved to other places where they could live after the accident.

@SashikG well the effects of radiation probably lasted alot longer than that money,

@skiie Today (2008) those 100 dollars are over 1,000 dollars. They also secured the safety of their homes as well.

  4. skiie

all they got was a piece of paper and a 100 dollars.

Uranium reactors are clearly too risky and expensive, if we consider the safety and hazardous waste disposal cost. Also the plutonium could be turned into nuclear bomb. The world should start building Thorium reactors instead. India and China are already moving into it. The rest of the world should follow. The US must greatly reduce their vast inventory of nuclear weapon too. We don’t need the ability to destroy the entire world trillions of time.

I seem to recall in 1986 when the space shuttle blew up that a Russian official made a remark that we were reckless with the lives of those killed. Then a couple months later came Chernobyl.

@LITTLEMSDEMI What ‘nuclear’ explosion are you talkin about?
Nothing “nuclear explode”, that was Hydrogen.
Japan is not going to be Chernobyl 2.0

@spankstrel … actually I meant UNinhabitable. But I’m sure you got what I meant ;)

@shi0086 further research and development in solar and wind aside. Say we stick with what we have now, as expensive as it is. You have a choice. You choose nuclear power for financial reasons. With no real solution for the end product and with powerplants that just destroy themselves and make whole stretches of land inhabitable if human supervision fails, they make a poor choice. How much is a habitable planet worth? China is a powerful country. Your choice could make all the difference. :)

  25. shi0086

@spankstrel hmmm, but you should know, whole human race is facing the shortage of energy.
except nuclear power, what we left? fossil fuels? those things are not infinite. hydro power? I’m Chinese, we have Three Gorges, but it cannot be built at everywhere. solar and wind? c’mon, you should know how expensive those are.
unless wo found new energy sources, we don’t have a choice but to use the nuclear power.
